There can be no Nobility where Nobility does not exist.

There can be no Nobility where Nobility does not exist. Give us a break Charles Savarin

Dominicans are you impressed? At last your dear president honorable his excellency Charles Savarin has called for the election reform they refused to give you before the elections, despite all your demands and the protests, and the tear gas you received for calling for it.

Now he says it is time for electoral reform to ensure that the rights of all eligible voters are protected and that all non-eligible voters are removed from the electoral list.” You just got to love him for recognizing that finally. How noble of him?

Charles Savarin now has the audacity to say to the Dominican public “I would urge members on both sides of this honorable house and the public at large to approach the debate on electoral reform from the point of view of ensuring that the rights of all eligible voters are protected and that the names of persons who are not eligible to be on the voters list in conformity with our laws are struck off.”  In the real world, they call that gaslighting.

He also called for an end to  hateful speech and conflicts on the matter of electoral reform and suggested that it is a continuing process and not a short term “once and for all” exercise. He acknowledged the need to empower the Electoral Commission to proceed with the exercise of issuing voter ID cards by approving the necessary legislation.  Where was this Charles Savarin when the citizens were camping at his gate calling him out to speak to the issue before he had helped Roosevelt Skerrit to solidify his dictatorship?

He added “We need, also, to encourage confidence in the institutions of the state and the mechanisms they provide for resolving differences.” But we ask, who is the we you speak about Charles Savarin? You had the opportunity to do that before the elections by doing the right thing which you refused to do. Are you now asking the people to have confidence in you are your betrayal of the constitution? You have some nerve.

He then urged members of parliament to put aside their differences and become united and “to build upon the foundations we have laid over the years.” His excellency cannot be serious, he has to be joking on this one because many will argue and rightfully so, that the administration that Charles Savarin has been part of for the past twenty years has dismantled the foundation of Dominica instead of building upon it. There is no foundation to speak about Mr. President.

Ironically he espoused that free and fair elections are the bedrock of Dominica’s democracy and said that the electoral process provided for in the Constitution and the House of Assembly Elections Act was diligently followed for the holding of the general elections in 2019.

Charles Savarin will remain a main player in the travesty that occured in Dominica’s last election. One must wonder what is the purpose of his self serving, pious conjecturing, faux statesman posture now. Yes Mr. President  “Last year’s election campaign could truly be described as one of the most unusual and divisive campaigns in the country’s political history,” But you helped make it so. Too little too late.

Your legacy will be that you served Roosevelt Skerrit and the labor party, you used the constitution as your footstool in doing so, and you helped cement a dictatorship in Dominica. This empty, meaningless, disingenuous speech cannot and will not redeem you.
