The Stewardship of Influence

God has graciously granted to each one of us a measure of influence. However, what distinguishes one person of influence from another is how each chooses to steward this precious gift. Stewardship is simply the management of something which has been entrusted into one’s care, and the same holds true for influence – it is a prized possession planted in us for the purpose of having a positive effect on the character, development or behavior of those within our sphere.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “Every man is a hero and an oracle to somebody, and to that person, whatever he says has an enhanced value.” So, who are you influencing and how can you build upon this deposit which has been made in you?

Let’s start with the matter of INTEGRITY. This is an integral part of our character, small segments of our individual lives clumped together to form the real picture of who we really are. It is about consistently doing what is right in all situations. It speaks of our make-up and not necessarily of what we do. Integrity breeds trust and that trust says, “I yield to your influence simply because of who you are.”

It must be pointed out, however, that influence is not the same as authority. Authority seeks to abuse; influence seeks to build. Authority often leads through position whereas influence with integrity leads to building others. Great influencers are authentic and are true to their respective purposes and assignments to the earth; they pursue their God-given destinies with passion. They have a commitment to connecting with others on a deeper level than most and are focused on developing gifts and potential. They are motivators and refuse to leave the world the way they found it.

In my years of being on a public platform, I have come to understand that the words influence and relationship are married as it is impossible to lead anyone without first developing a relationship. Therefore, it is a true statement that influencers connect with others before they try to take them anywhere.

There is much more to be said about the stewardship of influence, but for now, I will leave you with the following:

Influence is what builds a legacy. It is a process, but in order to maintain that level of (good) influence, one must be devoted to grow personally.

So today, with the understanding that every moment of every day you have the potential to influence someone, be determined to touch the hearts of humanity by being mindful of who your heavenly Father has designed you to be. In your own way, you are a mover and a shaker. Do so for the glory of God as well as for the betterment of mankind.

Selah!
