PRESIDENT SAVARIN GIVEN UNTIL 3PM TODAY TO CANCEL NOMINATION DAY

In a 3 page letter sent to the President, local lawyer Cara Shillingford acting on behalf of the Leader of the opposition and a group of concerned citizens have given President Charles Savarin up to 3PM today to cancel nomination day.

The letter cites 8 grounds under which the president has to consider the request for cancellation and threatens further legal action if the President fails to accede to the request.

The attorney in her letter reminds the President of his responsibility under section 55 of the constitution that gives him authority to set the election date for as late as February 5th, 2020.

The letter also cites the Non existent date of Wednesday November 19th and speaks to the 10 day gazetting requirement before nomination day.

The letter also point to the promises made by the Electoral commission to cleanse the voters list, and shares information about a meeting between the returning officers and the Chairman of the electoral commision and commissioner Alick Lawrence without the knowledge of or invitation to the two commissioners appointed by the Leader of the opposition.

Issues such as the promise of voter ID cards and the recommendations of international organizations such as the OAS, CARICOM and the Commonwealth were also raised in the letter.

We await to hear what the President’s response will be.

Gerard Burton has broken the law. He has shown openly that he is a party supporter of the LBP.’ and he sells Passports a conflict of interest is on his ongoing and clear interference in the voting process of the people of Dominica. I see this as dictatorial and not at all democratic. He should have resigned when the CCM requested his resignation, any decent interlectual, especially a lawyer, would have recluse himself from what can only be called a travesty of Justice, as he ignored the people breaking the election laws of our Constitution which were glaring, and openingly taking place all around him. I rest my case
