The Webster dictionary defines a hypocrite as a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings. In 2014 Gaston Brown was the leader of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party. We have obtained a youtube video of Mr Browne pleading and begging the Antiguan public to make sure they had their voter ID cards prior to elections . He continued to state that the 2014 election would determine whether or not the country continued to suffer under the incumbent government, the UPP. He felt the way forward to save Antigua and Barbuda was free and fair elections with voter ID cards. As the video rolled , he continued to appeal to the people to get that card so they can exercise their right to vote and save their country.
Fast forward to Nov 2019. Dominica finds itself in the same predicament as Antigua was back then. The people have been trying for several years now to obtain voter ID cards and overall electoral reform. Of Note, Gaston Browne is a very good friend of the Prime minister of Dominica , Roosevelt Skerrit. As a matter of fact , Gaston Brown has been on the political platform in Dominica supporting Skerrit and his party. The OECS has never released a statement on the issue in Dominica over the years. In August, by invitation of Prime Minister Skerrit a body consisting of members of OAS, CARICOM and the Commonwealth, made recommendations towards electoral reform. Roosevelt Skerrit and the Labor Party outright refused these recommendations. Roosevelt Skerrit proceeded to call general elections on December 6 2019 without electoral reform . The Dominican people took to the streets to protest for their rights. They were calling for electoral reform and the voter ID cards just as Gaston Brown had done in 2014.
Interestingly enough, Gaston Brown , as the OECS Chairman had been quiet throughout all this pleading by the Dominican people . Suddenly, now that the Dominican people are protesting for their right for free and free elections and hit the streets Mr Gaston Brown opens this mouth .
On November 20th 2019, he released a statement to the international press appealing for calm in Dominica. In his report to the news media it appeared that protesters were the agitators. He went on to say there should be an end to violence and disruptive activity to ensure general elections in Dominica are conducted in an atmosphere free of fear. This is where we call Mister Gaston Brown a hypocrite. As you can clearly see in the video below in 2014 this man was in the same situation begging and pleading with his people. 5 years later, is this just a case of selective amnesia ? Has Mr Browne changed his stance now that he is in power?
This seems to be what is currently wrong in the Caribbean from a political standpoint. We the people must address this at every level. As we watch these greedy politicians look out for themselves
When it was the Venezuela issue all these OECS and CARICOM leaders were running their mouths. When it becomes an issue in their own front yard they keep quiet .
The Dominican people are now stating firmly, to the likes of Gaston Brown to back off and stay out of their fight for their rights for free and fair elections. We are told that the people will not relent until they get electoral reform in Dominica. All of these bodies such as the OECS needs to be neutral and impartial especially in the matters of human rights and equal rights . We cannot have these regional organizations speaking only when it concerns their party and friends. There is an awakening and enlightenment in the Caribbean to this madness .
In the Holy Bible , Matthew 23, verse 27 and 28 clearly states “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.”
